

Krakow
is a city with a thousand years
of tradition. The former seat of the Polish
kings and capital of the country, nowa-
days it is an important European me-
tropolis. Krakow’s Old Town is a unique
treasure of works of art, historical monu-
ments and historic buildings, represent-
ing almost all architectural styles, from
the Middle Ages to the present day.
For the hundreds of years. TheMainMarket
Square has remained the heart of the city.
It is preserved in an unchanged form since
1257 and was included in the first list of
UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1978. For
600 years now, from the tower of St Mary’s
Basilica, every hour a bugle call, played to the
four winds, can be heard. Also for centuries
theWawel Royal Castle has been overlook-
ing the city.Krakow is also a city vibrating
with cultural life – in 2000 it was selected
European Capital of Culture and in 2014 –
a UNESCO City of Literature. Every year,
nearly hundred festivals and other cultural,
world- famous events take place here. The
capital of the Małopolska Region can also
boast a rich offer for sports and recreation
enthusiasts. In 2014 Krakow was selected
European City of Sport.
Sports Infrastructure
Management Board
of Krakow (ZIS)
The Sports Infrastructure Management
Board of Krakow, appointed on the 27th of
August 2008 by resolution of the Krakow
City Council started its statutory activities on
the 1st of January 2009. It is an independ-
ent organizational unit subordinate to the
Mayor of Krakow, managed by Director
Krzysztof Kowal.
ZIS cares about the expansion and mod-
ernisation of the sport and recreational facili-
ties of the Municipality of Krakow, ensures
modernmanagement and optimal utilisation
of the facilities by the clubs, associations and
residents of Krakow.
The Sports Infrastructure Management
Board of Krakow is also responsible for sports
and recreation events in the city. It also active-
ly participates in organisation of famous and
prestigious sports events, such as the Tour de
Pologne, FIVBVolleyball Men’sWorld Cham-
pionship Poland 2014 and EHF European
Men’s Handball Championship Poland 2016.
For its outstanding achievements in the
development of sports infrastructure and
creating favourable conditions for the popu-
larisation of physical culture, in the form of
14 “Orlik 2012” complexes, many residen-
tial and school sports centres, swimming
pools and halls, the ZIS received numerous
awards, including the “The best company”
(Firma na medal) distinction in the category
of sports and recreational facilities user, and
a prestigious golden statuette of the Build-
er of Polish Sports (Budowniczy Polskiego
Sportu). The first edition of the PZU Cracovia
Royal Half Marathon, organised by ZIS since
2014 received the Tomasz Hopfer Event of
the Year 2014 Award in the Debuts category.
The award was presented during the Mass
Runs Gala in Warsaw.
